Updates all around...

Got in a good deal of writing over the holidays…  Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with The CerulAeon Virus.
Back in October, I was asked to make some edits to a short story I had written.  With grad school, the day job and holiday planning all going at once,… not to mention, time with wife and kiddos, a bit of running here and there and of course, some Longhorn football to watch, well… it was December (early January) before I was able to make the changes.  Hope they are still able to publish it.  Stay tuned!
Oh and I also used the time to work on a piece for a short story competition here in the area, which gave me an idea for another short story, which gave me the idea for still another short story, and that’s where the time goes…
Additionally, I was given some fairly good advice by a friend and family member that prompted me to dig out the “mystery”/crime novel I finished a rough draft of back in 2010.  My new year’s resolution:  finish it and send it in!
Anyway...  I say all of that to say that work on The CerulAeon Virus is taking a short break while I focus on some things that are closer to (fingers crossed) publication.
So what am I working on now?  Well there’s more grad school.  Budget season at the day job.  Training for a half marathon in March.  Reading everything I can about the Texas Rangers 2013 season!  And um, well…  writing.  Obviously, that list was not given in order of importance, but it does illustrate an important notion:  there are only so many hours in the day, only so many days in a week, weeks in a month, etc.
In between all of those, work continues on the short stories mentioned above, editing/re-writing the crime novel and “new” writing.  That list probably is rendered in order of magnitude.  The short stories are part of building my writing resume.  I’ve been told the premise for the crime novel is a good one, and “new” writing – which I do try to do some of every day – fits very nicely in the gaps between all of the above.
As for sustenance, entertainment and the occasional, but necessary distraction, the following are all highly recommended (in no particular order):
-          Tony Hillerman, The Blessing Way
-          Henry Rollins’ radio show on the KCRW (always!)
-          Joe Kidd, starring Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall
-          The Unforgiven, starring Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman
-          The Jazz Times 2012 Readers Poll results
-          Black Flag – In My Head
-          Ben Folds Five – The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
-          Radiohead - Amnesiac
-          Christmas sugar cookies, with bits of peppermint baked in… yum!

And looking forward to…
-          Seeing The Hobbit... again!
-          New albums by Nick Cave and Steven Wilson
-          New Pat Metheny live CD
-          Longmire, Season 2!
-          And… a trip to the homeland this summer?!

Happy New Year!

Some good tunes to get the new Mayan age off to a proper start…

David Bowie – Station to Station and Low
John Coltrane – My Favorite Things
Miles Davis – Steamin’
Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet on Sky
Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland
King Crimson – Islands
Porcupine Tree – The Incident

Oh yeah, and happy new year.  Seems like it’s been about twelve months since we said that, right?
Whatever.  I still like to count time in terms of baseball seasons, and pitchers and catchers report in six weeks.
