At the wheel, but not asleep
My apologies for the lapse in time between updates... I promise you I have not been asleep at the wheel.
I finished the "wolves and coyotes" story (as I mentioned in a previous update), did all my edits and sent that thing on in to one of my favorite journals! Now comes the hard part... the waiting.
Anyway, the final version was renamed "The Road to Sovereignty", and is a character study of sorts, involving a father and son who own and operate a feed store. Most of the action occurs during an encounter with their accountant, early one summer, during the store's annual audit. You'll have to read the thing for the "wolves" and "coyotes" tie in... shameless plug, sorry.
I also incoporated a bit of nostalgia for the old Route 66, as well. May have been a little trite, but I couldn't help myself, and it was certainly heartfelt. The story is just over 5,400 words and is set in the small town of Santa Cruz, NM, making it another in my "New Mexico" series. I'm really proud of this one -- yes, yes I'm proud of all my "children" -- but this time, that is even more true than usual.
As for listening: I've been on a real Led Zeppelin kick (listening to How the West Was Won as I write this). I've also spent a lot of time with the new Steven Wilson, the new Nick Cave, and this week, the new Marnie Stern. Great stuff, all around!
And yes, I'm still reading Underworld by Don DeLillo. It is a phenomenol book; I just haven't been able to devote more than 20 - 30 minutes a day to it for the last couple of weeks. Something about budget season at the day job....

Just "finished" the first draft of a new short story, working title "Wolves and coyotes". Yes, I realize this is more of a ~tweet~ than an official blog update, but I'm excited and wanted to share!
Oh yeah, and I am loving the new Steven Wilson disc! Can't wait for my vinyl copy to arrive.
