Updates all around!

Well, well, well...

It's been an eventful week or 10 days.  Made a "B" in my Advanced Income Taxation class, the budget is almost done at the day job and I finally ventured back out for a nice run this weekend -- after taking about six weeks off (ok, it was a little longer than that) with plantar fasciitis symptoms.

But you aren't here to read about any of that, are you?

Okay, okay on to the updates:

1.)  The next installment in the "Shirasawa" series is written (mostly), but not edited.  In this episode, our favorite tree spirit makes her way up to a port town on the northern coast of Japan, where she meets an unsavory merchant.  The title for this one is "Shirasawa's Rage".  How's that for foreshadowing?

2.)  Started a couple of things for the "New Mexico" series.  One involves a run-in the auditor has with a client's son, a former Marine who is having some trouble re-adjusting to civilian life.  The other introduces the old guy to a new flame, a saucy Latina who teaches the accountant a thing or two about hope.

3.)  And finally, this morning I sent a select few of you the opening scene from the "Ghost Train" short story/novella/thing.  They say progress comes in fits and starts; hopefully, you like where I'm going with this one!

New story published today...

... at http://365tomorrows.com/.  This is the one written for those of you who like things that go boom!

It's called "The Spotter Alone";  I hope you like it.  :-)

Have a great week and thanks for reading.

My very own Gordian "ghost" knot!

Spent most of the weekend editing the "ghost train" story/novella/thing.  Spent much of that time trying to unravel a proverbial Gordian knot.  Yes of course, it was one of my own making.

A few details....  As a writer (or wanna-be writer, in my case), I always try to start the story with something that will catch the reader's eye and then hold their attention for a while -- something just interesting enough to keep them hangin' on until they're hooked.  Unfortunately sometimes that scene or initial series of events doesn't always fit the rest of the story, or in this case, a particular character's development.  Put another way, these things tend to have a mind of their own and they don't always play by the established "rules".

But then the old writer (me again) really likes the opening scene, thinks its one of the best parts of the whole story and tries to write his way out of the jam, creating...  yes, a Gordian knot.  Well, we all remember how that story came out in the end, don't we?!

It's ironic, but in solving the knot quandary, the "ghost train" story/novella/thing now has a beginning that is very similar to the first random thoughts I set to paper (yes, that handwritten draft) almost seven weeks ago.  Guess that's the most frustrating part about Gordian knots:  they take so darn long to unravel.

One quick tangent before parting:  In the middle of all my consternation, I pulled out a pen and some paper and started another "New Mexico" story.  Knot or no, the writing must go on!  Anyway, I'll save it for later, 'cause I know there's a clamor for the "train", but this one's going to be a good one.

...editing, re-writing and more editing...

Time for an update that's not dedicated to the old "ghost train"...

Been editing a couple of older stories the last few days.  Editing, re-writing.  More editing, more re-writing.  It's a cyclical process.  Painful.  Monotonous.

Some of you may wonder why there are so many comments about music on these pages.

Writing can be an arduous undertaking at times...  Music helps pass the time.

With that in mind, I took another look at the very first of my "New Mexico" stories.  Did some polishing, re-shaping.  Then did some more.

And while I was at it, this recent re-pressing of an old classic arrived in the mail:

When it was originally released, the band didn't even offer a title, just four mystical symbols...

The rest, as they say... is history!

Anyway, I finished editing the "New Mexico" story and sent that sucker in to my all time favorite literary journal (more on that later).

It's time to get back to the ghosts and their train....
